Minutes of Membership Meeting
February 2, 2008
National Eagle Center Wabasha, MN

The meeting was brought to order by President Dale Bluem with 24 members signed in.

The group was welcomed by NEC Director, Marybeth Garrigan who gave a short presentation about the NEC.  Construction began on the Center in 2006 and a Soft Opening took place in May 2007 with a Grand Opening in September 2007 with over 6,000 persons attending.  Attendance has consistently increased far exceeding expectations at 7-8,000 in l month and over 11,000 in October 2007.  The Center has15 Staff Members and over 30 Volunteers working 7 days a week from 10-5:00.
Their next big weekend will be “Soar With the Eagles” on March 7,8 &9, 2008 and will include boat, and bus tour events, and bird show.  They now have a Golden Eagle that has joined Harriet and Angel. Marybeth invited everyone to a tour of the Center after the meeting.

Rachel Yenter gave a short presentation about upcoming events in Wabasha.  Bottled water and candy was provided.

A few minutes were taken for everyone to introduce themselves and their business/location.

Secretary's Report: Carol Wiersma presented her last report as MVP Secretary.  Motion to approve was presented by Bea Koch and seconded by Paul Garry with no corrections or changes it was  approved.
Carol noted that we still need Town Captains and members to sign up for committees.

Treasurer's Report:  Dale Bluem presented his last report as MVP Treasurer.  He noted that the budget shortfall has decreased and we are under $900.00.  Rachel Yenter motioned to approve and seconded by Carol Wiersma with no corrections or changes it was approved.

Dale Bluem introduced Mary DeRoos as the new Secretary/Treasurer.  Mary thanked Carol for her persistence and hard work in keeping the organization on task and minutes recorded.

Committee Reports:

Dale passed a Sign-Up Sheet for the following Committees:
Garage Sale, Membership, and Marketing.

Web Site Committee:  Dale reported the Board met at 5:00 with Lavonne Wier of Voila to discuss what could be done to update the MVP web site.  He noted a number of changes need to take place and some links are not working. Voila will take our suggestions and advise the cost and make additional suggestions as we move along on this project.  The membership is encouraged to look at the site and send their suggestions to Mary at [email protected] and we would proceed from there.

No other Committee Reports were brought forward.
Dale noted that we need Town Captains for Alma and Red Wing and requested the membership  encourage these communities to get involved as we need representation from every member's community.

Travel Planner 2008
Dale presented the new 2008 Travel Planner and advised that the membership could pickup Planners this evening.  Pallets would be picked up Monday and delivered at specific locations.  Bea Koch will notify everyone by Email of the progress.
Mary noted that the publisher was notified a number of times by Email that the  GRB&Nature Festival would not happen in 2008.  A page article was submitted at least twice to the publisher about Watchable Wildlife and Nature events that would happen during 2008 , and was asked to place this article in the Planner.  Neither of these requests were done.
Bea Koch noted that her ad is noted with a Red Wing phone number.
Arrowhead Bluffs Museum ad is not as approved and corrections were not made as requested.
Other than these problems, the Planner was accepted.

MVP 2008 Meetings

August 6, 2008 will be at Frontenac State Park
November 5, 2008 – Carol W. will check on Wisconsin side to see if someone could hold this meeting
December – Christmas Party at AmericInn Wabasha

Dale noted that he would like to see towns working together to host an upcoming meeting.  This would spread the responsibility and cost of refreshments.

New Business:

Membership Recruitment:  Dale announced the Board decided that we offer members a 25% discount on their next membership if they recruit (l) new member and 50% discount for (2) new members, etc..  The new members cannot have been members in the past.  This is an incentive for promoting MVP.
Vic brought up the fact that with changes in the By-Laws that new year begins August l, 2008 that dues will need to be paid by July 31.  This means the present membership lasts only 9 months.  Rachel Yenter noted that the By-Laws were passed with that understanding.  New members joining now would not be in the 2008 book, but would be listed on the web site and get a Free page on the web site if they choose to take advantage of that.

Tour de Pepin:  Kurt Schreck  presented the plan for a new bike tour event around Lake Pepin beginning and ending in Lake City, MN.  It will have 3 legs, from Lake City to Wabasha and NEC with return by shuttle, from Lake City to Stockholm, WI with return by Pearl of the Lake Paddle wheel boat, and from Lake City completely around Lake Pepin.  More information is available on web site at www.tourdepepin.com.  An ad is on page 32 of 2008 MVP Planner. Volunteers and Sponsors are needed.  There are 3 levels, Gold for $1,000, Silver for $500 and Bronze $250 and there will be logo and web site benefits.  The committee is collaborating with towns around Lake Pepin for water and food stops.  Committee wants to develop a lot of angles, anyone  interested in volunteering, please contact Lake City Chamber of Commerce at 651-345-4123.  A brochure will be available by end of May.

Peppie Monster Promotion:  Larry Nielson presented a new idea for area promotion.  After seeing a PBS film on Lake Champlain about “Champ” their lake monster, he  investigated information about any such sightings on Lake Pepin and found the MNHS Almanac of 4-28-1871 noted a first sighting of a Lake Pepin monster.  Larry has created a web site www.peppie.net and with the backing of the LCTB is offering a reward of 10,000 for anyone that can document a Lake Pepin sighting of Peppie with a specific photograph and dna testing at the Uof M.  He is looking for comments and ideas from the MVP membership about this idea.

Conferences:
Wisconsin Governor's Conference on Tourism:  Carol Wiersma will be attending and noted it is the largest in the nation.  We have a Free booth at Monday's Market Place and she requested all brochures, display photos, etc. be delivered to her prior to end of February.  She will provide a follow up report.

Carol advised she was asked by Joyce Hoelting from the Department of Community Vitality to approach MVP to Request a Speaker for a meeting about Making Communities Work-Leadership across Public Private, Nonprofit and Geographic Boundaries. She is asking that someone from MVP attend and give a presentation on MVP.  This is the same department that Toni Smith worked for and Toni recommended that they seek a Speaker from MVP for this conference.
The dates are April 21 & 22.  All expenses will be paid and it will apparently include some bigger name speakers, including Tim Penny and someone else whose name she didn't provide.  Carol has asked Mary Anne Collins-Svoboda to provide the perspective from the early days and she agreed.  This will help the MVP Speaker formulate their presentation.
Kurt Schreck agreed to participate.

Pat Mutter noted that the Sustainable Tourism Conference will be in Duluth, MN at the Center for Rural Education on

Next Meeting:  May 7, 2008 at the Marine Art Museum in Winona.  Dave Vogel from MN Dept. of Tourism Southern will do a presentation.
