Kwong Yem Han is a first generation Chinese American whose ancestors were members of the Royal Court of the Song Dynasty during the twelfth century. She was born and educated in Sacramento, California where she received her Bachelors Degree in Art from the California State University, Sacramento in 1972. The following year she studied the history of Chinese Art at the Cheng Chi University in Taipei, Taiwan. In 1990 she received her Masters Degree in Education from the United States International University in San Diego, California. For the past fifteen years she has lived in Pepin, Wisconsin with her husband, Dr. Larry Hovde, and children Mary and Deborah.

During the year she spent in Taiwan she studied Chinese Calligraphy with Professor Li Pu Tong. During the 1987-1988 school year she taught English at the Beijing Medical School in Beijing, China. While there she studied Chinese Calligraphy with Professor Yang Xuan-ting, who is known as the "King of the Big Brush" throughout China and Chinese Watercolor techniques with several artists at the Beijing Academy of Arts and Crafts. Her former Chinese teachers have authored numerous books on Chinese Calligraphy and Watercolor techniques.

In 1992 she presented a workshop on Chinese Calligraphy at the Walker Art Gallery in Minneapolis, Minnesota. During the last ten years she has had numerous Solo Exhibitions of her Work at various Universities and Galleries in Wisconsin and Minnesota. In addition, she gave demonstrations of Chinese Calligraphy using convention brushes and her "Big Brush," as well as sword dancing demonstrations in New Mexico, Minneapolis, Minnesota and Wausau, Wisconsin. She also exhibited her "Big Brush" paintings at the Ordway Theater in St. Paul, Minnesota. She was a member of the board of the Wisconsin Assembly of Local Arts from 1996 to 2000. In 2002 she taught courses in Chinese Calligraphy and Chinese Watercolor Techniques at the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of the Arts at Rhinelander.

In 2004 she produced eight Chinese Calligraphy cards using the Chinese characters for Love, Eternity, Long Life, Double Happiness, Serenity, Thank You, Happy Birthday and Prosperity and eight Chinese Watercolor Painting cards. They are for sale for $3.50 per card and a box of eight cards for $25.00 with a shipping and handling fee of $5.00.
